I think the selected pieces show the progression I have made since specialising in Fine Art. I have found drawing is an important part of how I begin my research in what to make. I like exploring different techniques and media and it is easier to generate lots of work when researching on a smaller scale (as seen in series of small scale paintings in my sketch book). I enjoy researching other artist's who help trigger new ideas for my own work. I think taking the small or simple designs and making them larger or more textured has been a successful way of working currently. Layering the painting with either collage or paint bring richness and depth to the piece. I particularly like in 'Collage, Ink and Paint' pieces you can see right through the piece and also right to the original background made up of my life drawings. This tries to capture the idea of memories as you can see each stage of the piece. I also like considering the original subject in my pieces, though in much of my work this isn't immediately apparent. This is seen in the 9 piece 'Ink, Pen, Charcoal and Paint' piece. Each piece can be moved either in its position on the board or rotated to fit next to different pieces from the 9. This links back to the changing nature of fire which is the original subject of the piece.

Manchester has a lot to offer as a specialised course. I think this will help me focus on painting and enable me to push myself in that discipline to the extremes. In the second year, I was excited how the course really pushed work experience and getting your art out into the public domain. There was a good atmosphere when i went to the open day, the students seemed enthusiastic about the course and how being in Manchester helped them improve as artists. This is also supported by past students, who were on my foundation course who went to Manchester, who explained how they enjoyed the course. This positive feedback and from personal experience at the open day helps me to believe that Manchester will help me to become better at what I do and achieve my full potential as an artist.
